Location

Situated on the western coast of Mozambique’s Benguerra Island, the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, &Beyond Benguerra Island lies in an area known for its excellent fishing and dive sites, as well as it’s signature white beaches. The island’s diverse habitats include forests, savannahs, wetlands and freshwater lakes, supporting a vibrant ecosystem that hosts over 140 bird species. The island is also home to the Bazaruto National Park. Guests may drive or fly to the city of Vilanculos on the Mozambique mainland, before taking a boat or helicopter transfer to the island.

Facilities

&Beyond Benguerra Island’s main facilities include a spacious open-sided lounge, bar and dining room which extends into outdoor seating, a gift shop stocking local crafts, a small spa and a swimming pool in which diving lessons take place. On the beach, there is a quaint bar ingeniously constructed out of an old dhow boat. You will also find a fully-equipped dive centre and stables with ten horses available for riding.

Throughout the lodge, the décor blends a crisp nautical palette with rustic textures, giving a fresh, modern feel. The restaurant serves traditional Mozambiquan cuisine, with buffet-style breakfasts and lunches and table-service in the evenings.

Rooms

The lodge has thirteen beachside rooms, with two intimate and economical Cabanas (which nonetheless have a private plunge pool, veranda, and great oceanic views), and ten spacious Casinhas, which have a larger decking area, open-plan structure, and a free-standing bathtub. Larger groups can stay in the three-bedroom Casa Familia. All come with en suite bathroom, a private veranda with a plunge pool, and direct beach access.

Activities

&Beyond Benguerra Island is a great destination for scuba diving, with a range of dive sites that includes the superb Two-Mile Reef. The pristine reefs are also excellent for snorkelling, kayaking and deep water fly-fishing. Explore the island with a 4×4 tour, cultural visits to local villages, or a sunset cruise in a dhow or catamaran. The lodge even provides guided horse-riding around the local area. Island-hopping or castaway picnics can be arranged if booked in advance.

After a long day of exploration, guests can unwind with a message from one of the lodge’s specialists.

Like the majority of Southern Africa Mozambique has distinct wet and dry seasons. With small regional variations aside, the wet season starts between October and November and lasts through to April or May. These rains are however not ‘Monsoon’ like, largely due to the significant rain shadow effect of Madagascar which essentially acts as a giant buffer. Rainfall amounts are therefore surprisingly small considering its location along the Indian Ocean. The dry season lasts from April or May all the way through to October or November, with clear skies dominating. The occasional shower is still possible during this time, just unlikely. The countries location so close to the equator as well as to the Indian Ocean makes temperatures relatively consistent throughout the year, with an average high of between 23°C/73°F and 82°C/82°F.
