Huntingdon House is the original 1932 home of Maclean Kay, founder of Satemwa Tea Estates. The grand colonial-style building is now a boutique guesthouse with heaps of character and a lively backstory. Ideal for a remote stay surrounded by plenty of gardens, rolling hills and tea fields to explore.
Location
On the Shire Highlands, the guesthouse is located on the Satemwa Tea Estate within the Thyolo district of Southern Malawi. Thyolo is Malawi’s tea-producing region full of old estates, plantations and rolling hills. The property is surrounded by sprawling gardens and boasts gorgeous views of Mount Mulanje and the Lower Shire Valley.
Rooms
There are just five uniquely decorated rooms named after each of their former functions: Mother’s Room, Father’s Room, The Nursery, The Chapel and the Planters’ Suite. Interiors are spacious with king-size beds, draped mosquito nets, tall ceilings and en-suites compromising claw-foot bathtubs. The Chapel even features a private outdoor dining area.
Communal Areas
Dine in front of the fire in the old dining room and retreat to the cosy living room for post-dinner drinks. For eating al fresco, the airy patio leads out to beautifully manicured gardens with tea fields beyond.
Activities
Walking the hills of the tea estate is a popular activity where guests can visit the tea factory and coffee fields surrounding the property. Day trips to the Zomba Plateau and Mount Mulanje for further walking and mountaineering are available. Â Bird enthusiasts will enjoy guided walks to discover the endangered Throlo Alethe and eight bikes are available to explore the estate on two wheels. For a laid-back afternoon, the guesthouse lawns are perfect for a game of croquet or boules.
