Magashi Camp is a brand-new addition to the Wilderness Safaris ‘Classic Camp’ portfolio set within Akagera National Park. Like all of the Wilderness Safaris highly reputable properties, the luxury camp is rooted in the core purpose of conserving Rwanda’s savannah ecosystem like the shoebill stork and black rhino.
Awarded: Bronze
Location
The Akagera National Park offers some of the most scenic savannahs in East Africa with a diverse range of landscape to enjoy from open plains to woodland, swampland to picturesque mountains. Magashi Camp, located in the Eastern corner of the park, overlooks the vast lake Rwanyakazinga which is home to hippos, shoebill stork, shy sitatunga and crocodiles, perfectly viewable from the lodge’s ample deck. Given the opportunity, we would highly recommend combining Magashi Camp with Wilderness Safari’s other Rwanda property, Bisate Lodge, situated in the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park.
Rooms
The intimate camp has six spacious and elegant tented guesthouses furnished with en-suite bathrooms, a complimentary minibar and a writing desk for a perfectly wild contemplative sanctuary. Built in traditional safari style, the rooms are designed with modest luxury in mind, raised off the ground on wooden decks and offering panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. The camp is also fully solar powered.
Communal Areas
Paying homage to traditional Rwandan culture and design, Magashi’s main area is rustically designed, boasting a comfortable lounge, dining area, bar and wine cellar. Guests can lounge by the fire-pit on the spacious viewing deck or take a dip in the pool after a day out in the park.
Activities
The only private access area in Akagera, Magashi Camp offers a unique wildlife experience for its guests. Take expertly guided game drives by day or night, boating trips in a swamp cruiser and year-round walking safaris in some of the permitting areas. The camp also offers a small stock of rods and reels for those wishing to try their hand at fishing and birding excursions in an internationally recognised IBA (Important Bird Area) with over 500 species of birds.

DRIER PERIOD
A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.
Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.
Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.
The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
