Mumbo Island Camp is a rustic eco-camp on a deserted tropical island. For those searching for a true Robinson Crusoe experience, this camp is the ideal spot where guests can roam the island freely, enjoy magnificent views and explore the lake from a locally crafted haven.
Location
Mumbo Island is a tiny island, only 1km in diameter and accessible by a 45-minute ride in a traditional fishing boat. The island is situated within the world’s first freshwater national park, Lake Malawi National Park. Adhering to strict eco-architecture principles, there’s no electricity on the island so water is solar heated and lighting is by paraffin lamps.
Rooms
Five rooms are situated on a small satellite island reached by wooden walkways. Each of the rooms is spaced a good distance apart for privacy. Constructed with reed and thatch, the rooms are simple yet comfortable offering private decks with lake views and hammocks. The interiors are small and cosy furnished with bright colours and local fabrics. En-suites have bucket showers and eco-friendly products but the eco-loos are separate and reached by a wooden walkway.
Communal Areas
Communal areas are spread across the island and compromise a lounge, dining area, bar and gift shop built on boulders above the beach. All the furnishings at the lodge are locally sourced and crafted so anywhere you choose to relax is unique and full of soul. The beach also has a water sports gazebo offering kayaks, wet suits and snorkelling equipment.
Activities
Other than swimming in the warm, clear waters of Lake Malawi, guests can kayak around the island, scuba-dive to discover underwater granite boulders and tropical fish and hike the nature trails that weave through the island. A map is in every tent for you to route your way comfortably and as there are no animal dangers on the island, almost everywhere is within limits.
