Awarded: Silver
Location
The house sits right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park where high-altitude cloud forests are home to a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It enjoys a surrounding landscape of wetlands and green meadows with incredible views of the Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyino Mountains. While completely private, the house sits alongside sister property, Kwitonda Lodge on 178 acres of land sharing all the same activities. The land is part of Singita’s intention to restore and reforest the landscape and ensure that the park’s unique and endangered wildlife continue to enjoy a thriving habitat.
Rooms
The house has four en-suite bedrooms sleeping, eight people. Interiors are full of hand-crafted details from pretty clay pots, handmade tiles to woven panels and ceilings. Floor-to-ceiling windows in each room open out to patios and stone fireplaces for a seamless flow to the lush landscape beyond.
Communal Areas
Built entirely from natural and local materials, the communal spaces are contemporary in style and completely unique in architectural design. An earthy colour palette runs throughout with rusty reds, warm browns and large art pieces adorning the walls. Maximising the remarkable views and remaining sensitive to the earth it sits on, guests have the benefit of open-plan lounges with comfy leather sofas and a dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows. There are both indoor and outdoor stone fireplaces, an interactive kitchen and a private wine cellar. Be entertained in the cinema room and end the day of activity with a swim in the private heated pool. The house also has a full staff including a private chef and a host.
Although boasting a number of spacious areas to lounge and dine, the house can use all facilities and amenities at Kwitonda Lodge. Become immersed in the lodge’s conservation efforts in the dedicated Conservation Lounge. Guests can watch documentaries, browse books and maps, as well as explore all the activities on offer around the area. Stroll and chat with staff in the lodge’s farm-to-table garden about all the seasonal produce on offer.
Activities
Take treks through the scenic forest to spend time with Volcanoes’ resident mountain gorillas. Singita can assist guests with booking gorilla trekking permits in advance. Take guided hikes to the site of Dian Fossey’s famous research camp with breathtaking views of Lake Ngezi and encounter golden monkeys foraging in the forest. Spend time with locals at Iby’lwacu Cultural Village in Kinigi to learn of ancient traditions, take local guided walks and experience traditional dance, song and stories.
Guests can also visit the lodge’s Akarabo Nursery and vegetable garden. This on-site nursery hosts more than 60,000 plants purchased from neighbouring communities. Rehabilitating the park with the proper vegetation is part of Singita’s dedication to conserving the Rwandan landscape.

DRIER PERIOD
A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.
Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.
Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.
The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
