From small but idyllic tropical islands such as Nosy Ankao and Nosy Tsarabanjina to remote mainland destinations such as the jungle-swathed Masoala National Park and the stunning vistas of St Lucia Bay, Madagascar boasts more than its fair share of isolated beach-resorts-with-a-difference. Small, exclusive, and often set apart from other lodges by tens or even hundreds of kilometres, they tend to have a dual focus on beachside and terrestrial activities. Such time-honoured pastimes as sunbathing, swimming and eating fine seafood are all on the menu, but most lodges are also located close to good snorkelling and/or diving sites, and many also offer deep-sea marine activities such as game fishing or whale- and dolphin-watching cruises. Most also stand close enough to one or another national park or protected forest to offer guided jungle walks in search of lemurs, chameleons and other endemic wildlife – making for a uniquely Malagasy experience twist on a classic beach holiday.
