A full 585km long and up to 100km wide, iconic Lake Malawi accounts for more than 15% of Malawi’s surface area and its tally of 800-plus fish species is higher that of any other lake in the world. The lake is also the indisputable focal point of Malawi’s tourist industry, thanks to a seemingly endless string of beautiful palm-fringed beaches set below the towering mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment.
The sheer scale of Lake Malawi means that it is serviced by resorts catering to all tastes and budgets. Nkhata Bay, on the northwest shore, is the most popular backpacker hangout and renowned for its sociable vibe and cheap diving courses. Its southern counterpart Cape Maclear stands within the 95km2 Lake Malawi National Park and offers good snorkelling, wildlife viewing and birdwatching.
