Those in search of alluringly wild coastlines tend to find what they’re looking for along the east coast of Mauritius, where virgin beaches are shaded by casuarina trees. Development along this stretch of coastline hasn’t been too rampant, and that’s just the appeal of this area.
Travellers looking for adventure will find it near the village of Roches Noires, where there are many caves and lava tubes that are now freshwater springs – fun to explore, swim and snorkel in. The nearby Bras d’Eau National Park has a lovely walking/mountain bike trail that winds through forests and past some caves.
The exceptionally beautiful Belle Mare region is where many of the island’s most exclusive hotels are found. The beach here, one of the longest on the island, is a ribbon of powder-fine white sand that fringes a crystal-clear lagoon. One of the more popular spots on the east coast – but still well worth a visit – is Blue Bay. Turquoise, aqua, emerald, navy, blue… you’ll soon run out of words to differentiate between the hues of this magnificent bay on the south-east coastline, which forms part of the largest marine park in Mauritius. More than 80 percent of the corals are still alive and at least 50 species have been recorded; the snorkelling here really is outstanding.
