"Set in the sweltering Lower Shire Valley south of Blantyre, once neglected Majete has enjoyed a recent resurgence as the result of a comprehensive program of reintroductions overseen by the African Parks Network. Now home to all the Big Five, along with a wide range of antelopes and other grazers, the reserve is bounded by a scenic stretch of the Shire River punctuated by the surging white water of the Kapichira Falls. ”

PLAN MY JOURNEY

Majete Wildlife Reserve

Since being taken over by the African Parks Network in 2003, Majete has undergone a dramatic phoenix-like resurrection from neglected and poached-out backwater to arguably the country’s top game-viewing destination. Indeed, more than 3,000 individual animals have been reintroduced over this period, among them breeding populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthog, eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, nyala, impala and zebra. Supplementing naturally occurring populations of leopard, hippo, greater kudu and various monkeys and small antelope, this has transformed Majete into a great all-round safari destination both for self-drivers and those on package tours. Majete also offers a great range of guided activities, including game drives, night drives, boat trips and bird walks. A scenic highlight, Kapichira Falls – reached along a short self-guided footpath – is the dramatic and very noisy surge of white water that prevented Livingstone’s pioneering Zambezi Expedition from exploring the Shire further upriver by boat in 1858.

Like the majority of Southern Africa, Malawi has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. With small regional variations aside, the wet season starts between October and November and lasts through to April or May. The dry season lasts from April or May all the way through to October or November, with clear skies dominating. The occasional shower is still possible during this time, just unlikely. Although it is possible to visit Malawi throughout the year, we would recommend visiting during the dry season when clear skies and cooler temperatures dominate.
