Location
The lodge is located on a 70km2 private reserve in the Majete Wildlife Reserve at the confluence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi Rivers. The reserve is a conservation success story after its former decline due to extensive poaching in the area. After being taken over by African Parks, the reserve has been revitalised, now housing all Big Five, a growing population of leopard, lions and antelope, and varied birdlife. The landscapes range from dry-land habitats to waterways including miombo and riverine woodlands, small kopjes and rapids.
Rooms
Shaded by wild mango trees and giant leadwood, eight chalets line the high riverbank overlooking the Shire River. With vegetated roofs covered in indigenous succulents, each chalet blends into its surroundings to create a peaceful, cool and secluded space for each guest. Rooms are contemporary with king-size beds facing the river and outdoor deck, creamy colours and locally sourced materials throughout. The en suites are very spacious with river-view showers, sunken bathtubs and windows which fold back to open up the space.
Communal Areas
Crossing a bridge over the Mkulumadzi River, guests will arrive at the main lodge with its high thatched roof, leadwood trunk beams and views of the river from its completely open side. Decorated in a contemporary style, the space offers a lounge with wicker seating, indoor and outdoor dining with seating spread across different levels and a bar lined with bar stools, all with river views. Â The swimming pool is surrounded by a wooden deck dotted with sunbeds and shade with a firepit close by.
Activities
In keeping with the style of Robin Pope Safaris’ properties, activities at the lodge are very flexible and are led by highly experienced guides. Walking safaris through the valley of the Mkulumadzi River are a highlight and two hides sit on the concession for observing the waterhole. For relaxing game viewing, take morning or afternoon boat trips on the Shire River along to where the river opens out onto a lake above the Kapichira Falls. Game drives are also available with the possibility of seeing Majete’s resident lion prides and elusive black rhino.
