With perfect views of the lake and mountains, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a privately owned accommodation promising a homely atmosphere and quirky décor throughout. Staking its claim as a ‘gourmet getaway’, a stay at the farmhouse is guaranteed relaxation and exceptional cuisine from owner and chef, Richard Poynton.
Location
The farmhouse is nestled in the Kamberg Valley. Surrounded by gullies and 500 acres of undulating hills, it borders the Giants Castle Nature Reserve in the Drakensberg Mountains where plenty of hiking, biking and birding is on offer. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Highmoor Nature Reserve makes up 90% of the farmhouse’s border and is just a 10-minute drive away.
Rooms
11 rooms are housed in converted stables and each is creatively decorated with some staple furnishings such as claw-foot bathtubs and mohair blankets. The rooms overlook a private dam with stunning mountain views beyond. There are also two executive cottages which offer more space and privacy with views over the wetlands. One is decorated in a Swedish naturalist style with soft blues, red and painted wooden walls and the other is wild-west themed!
Communal Areas
The communal areas are decorated in an eclectic and original style to create a warm and relaxed environment throughout. The décor is wild and matches the rooms in uniqueness. Richard and Mouse, owners of the farmhouse, create flavoursome and fresh menus which make use of local producers for their sumptuous seven-course dinners served in the elegant dining room. Guests will dine overlooking the distant mountains and lake.
Activities
Take mountain hikes and walks in Highmoor Nature Reserve where Eland, reedbuck, jackal, serval and more roam the landscape. Here, avid fishers will find three big Trout Dams stocked with Rainbow Trout and fishing is available all year round. Embark on horseback in the Drakensberg or discover the Bushman rock art dating back 3,000 years. Guests can also visit the 184 craft shops on the Midlands Meander including cheesemakers, pottery shops, weavers and much more.
