Lake Kivu Serena is a tropically inspired hotel, situated in a dramatic setting on the white, sandy shores of Lake Kivu. With access to a private beach overlooking pretty islets and peninsulas draped in thick forest, the Lake Kivu Serena is the perfect location for a quiet weekend after gorilla trekking, for families and couples alike.

Location

The Serena lies on the outskirts of Gisenyi, on the Western edge of Rwanda. Just a short distance to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the property is situated on the northernmost shores of Lake Kivu.

Rooms

The shoreside hotel has 66 en-suite and simply designed rooms, each with a private balcony and lake views. As guests can expect from any Serena property, the rooms are comfortable and finished to a high standard but lack the individuality of smaller or more independent properties. However, the host of activities on offer, the beautiful setting and the easy access to Lake Kivu make up for what the hotel lacks in character.

Communal Areas

The Serena is a large hotel with many comfortable places to settle in, from the airy open-plan foyer dotted with squashy leather-covered couches to a huge pool and surrounding deck and beautiful gardens which make for a popular wedding venue. The most enticing feature of the hotel is the access to a private beach on the edge of Lake Kivu making the property a hard one to leave!

Activities

The hotel itself offers a range of recreational activities such as cycling, boating, kayaking, volleyball, tennis and fishing. However, for those wanting to branch out a little further, treks up the Nyiragongo Volcana to see the spectacular lava pools at its peak or hikes into Volcanoes National Park to meet Gorillas are both highly recommended excursions. The property is also only 15 minutes from the volcanic Amshuza Hot Springs for guests who wish to soak their muscles in the springs healing waters. All activities can be followed up by a relaxing, holistic treatment at the hotel’s Maisha Health Centre.

DRIER PERIOD

A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.

Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.

Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.

The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
