Ruzizi Lodge is an intimate tented retreat nestled amid one of Rwanda’s flourishing wilderness areas. Located on the forested shores of Lake Ilhema and designed to inspire harmony with its natural surroundings, the lodge is one of only a few properties in Akagera National Park and perfect for those looking for a serene savannah experience.

Location

Ruzizi Tented Lodge is situated thirty minutes inside the gates of Akagera National Park and a scenic drive from the capital city of Kigali, the lodge sits on the shores of Lake Ilhema, Rwanda’s second largest lake. The first of its kind in Rwanda, Ruzizi Lodge offers guests an unmatched intimacy with the diverse landscape and beautiful surroundings of the National Park. With trees growing through gaps in the roof, walkways that are moulded around the vegetation and hippos roaming the lakeshore, guests can enjoy a truly authentic experience amid nature.

Rooms

The property offers nine guest tents positioned along the shore of the lake and shaded by palm and fig trees. Each tent is mounted atop a sturdy stone plinth and includes a cool shaded veranda, modern en-suite bathrooms and a hammock to spend a tranquil afternoon overlooking the lake and its diverse wildlife. An environmentally conscious property, Ruzizi relies on solar power for its electricity.

Communal Areas

The thatched main area, with a bar and comfortable seating area, is accessible by raised walkways that spread throughout the property and lead from each of the rooms.  Guests can enjoy the spacious deck overlooking the lake with a fire-pit for warmth during the evenings while listening for the sounds of bathing hippos! For rainy days, a cosy indoor dining area decorated in earthy tones and locally crafted furniture is the perfect place to retreat to.

Activities

Situated within the relatively unvisited Akagera National Park, guests can have a high-end safari experience without following the crowds. Guided game drives (by day or night), boat safaris and superb birding trips are all on offer here as well as trips to local communities and a unique ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the park. Works perfectly well paired with gorilla and primate experiences in Rwanda.

DRIER PERIOD

A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.

Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.

Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.

The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
