An olive estate on the slopes of the Langeberg Mountains, Galenia estate is a four-star accommodation with a contemporary Cape Dutch design. Awarded: Bronze
Location
The estate is just 3km from Montagu on South Africa’s scenic Route 62. It is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains enjoying views across the Klein Karoo. Covered by indigenous renosterbos and fynbos, the estate covers 1300 acres with olive groves, gardens, five large dams and the Boontjiesrivier. Montagu itself is nearby with its museums, galleries and gardens.
Rooms
There are ten suites at the hotel situated within five thatched cottages and each with its own private veranda enjoying views over the olive grove or lake. The rooms are all similar in design with fresh, floral decorations and clean, neutral colours. A lounge area features a log fire for cold evenings and en-suites have claw-foot bathtubs and outdoor showers.
Communal Areas
The Estate House forms the main area of the hotel. Once a barn, it has now been renovated to enjoy a modern Cape Dutch design. The chic, rustic interiors boast gable windows and ceilings crafted from tree trunks. Sit by the fireplace in the airy lounge and dine with floor-to-ceiling views of the landscape in the stylish dining area. There is also plenty of places to lounge and enjoy drinks with views of the gardens and swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers and parasols.
Activities
There are a number of walking trails through the grounds of the estate both for seasoned walkers and those who prefer a quiet stroll. Take mountain bikes across the longer nature trails and guided morning walks before breakfast. During the late afternoon, guests can attend olive familiarization and tastings to learn of the different cultivators and process. Head to the nearby Marloth Nature Reserve, explore the Robertson Wine Valley and visit the cultural attractions of Montagu.

With this in mind, there is no real good or bad time to visit, but it is worth bearing in mind that the summers are hot and winter surprisingly cool. We would, therefore, recommend the spring and autumn months as the best time to visit.
