Kakuli Bush Camp is an intimate camp with sweeping views of the Luangwa River. This Time + Tide owned camp takes its name from the buffalo which inhabit the area and is wonderfully placed for game-viewing. Flowing freely out to its surrounding landscape, this ‘no frills’ camp is ideal for those favouring walking safaris and the solitude of the bush.
Location
Situated in a game-rich section of South Luangwa National Park, the camp overlooks a floodplain from its elevated position on the banks of the Luangwa River. With no fences around the camp, the property opens out to the rain trees and tamarind trees in the surrounding landscape. The game viewing in the area is brilliant with large lion population, spotted hyena and pods of hippos and elephants right on the doorstep.
Rooms
The five tented chalets are simple yet decorated well, offering great views of the river from the comfort of the cosy beds. With pale blue and cream tones, canvas walls and sturdy doors, the front of the tent opens out for river vistas and a thatched roof and mesh windows keep the tents cool during the day. En suite bathrooms are open to the sky and separated by a curtain with polished concrete floors, reed walls and all amenities provided.
Communal Areas
The thatched dining room is open-sided and simple with sandy floors to keep the space cool during hotter days. A bar and lounge area is decked out with neutral-toned sofas and chairs with a wooden deck and firepit overlooking the riverbank. Nearer to the water’s edge, another thatched area offers sofas and chairs and a picturesque space for dining during the evenings.
Activities
A highlight at Kakuli is the guided walking safaris although guests can take day and night drives around the loop roads by the lodge. Walk with expert guides along the river or explore after dark to observe predators as they head out to hunt. Kakuli is also one of a few camps open during Zambia’s ‘Emerald Season’ from January to April, a lush time of year when safari drives, boat trips and the camp is less populated.
