Kunene River Lodge is an adventurous camp enjoying an idyllic setting by the Kunene River. With a simple design and plenty of comforts, this remote camp makes an excellent base to enjoy the thrilling activities on offer along the river and the nearby falls.

Location

The lodge is perched on boulders above the banks of the Kunene River on the northern end of the Hartmann Valley. Surrounded by arid desert and rugged mountains, the camp sits isolated within a green oasis on the lush riverbank. It overlooks the riverine vegetation and plenty of birdlife frequenting the banks. Sitting close to the Ruacana Falls and Epupa Falls, the lodge is popular with white-water rafting expeditions.

Rooms

Seven dome tents are covered with reeds and surrounded by jackalberry and leadwood trees. Interiors are furnished simply with twin beds, bedside tables and an en-suite bucket shower with hot water provided. The lodge also offers twelve shady campsites by the river.

Communal Areas

The open-fronted dining area provides perfect views along the Kunene River and guests can help themselves to the ‘bush bar’. A deck extends over the river making for another perfect place to dine or simply relax with drinks.

Activities

Take boat trips along the Kunene to explore the sandy banks and gentle rapids of the river. Plenty of adventure activity is on offer at nearby Ondorusu Gorge where white-water rafting is a popular choice and four-day rafting excursions are available where guests can camp overnight on the riverbank. Visit with the nomadic Himba communities to learn of local traditions and culture and marvel at the sunset on sundowner cruises.

WET SEASON – ‘EMERALD SEASON’

This is the peak of the wet season, yet days with rainfall are very spread out.

A season of change as the landscape transforms into a green flowering ‘desert’, a beautiful time to visit. Great birding with migratory species present.

Temperatures are pleasant, averaging 26°C/29°F midday, but can occasionally rise well above this. Night time lows average a comfortable 17°C/63°F.

Like the rest of Namibia, Kaokoland has very distinct wet and dry seasons; the wet season occurs from November through to early May, during this time, thunderstorms infrequently occur, the rest of the year is dry. Although Kaokoland can be visited throughout the year, it is at its best during the peak of the dry season when day time temperatures are a little more pleasant. Having said this there is a lot to be said for the ‘emerald season’; a rich diversity of blooming flowers, beautiful green scenery and fantastic birding make for a wonderful and unique experience.
