Sitting almost invisibly among the honey-coloured boulders of Damaraland, Mowani Mountain Camp is a sanctuary from the heat of the desert. With a spectacular sundowner spot high on the rocks, the historical site of Twyfelfontein right on its doorstep and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a breathtaking choice to embark on an exploration through southern Damaraland.

Location
Mowani Mountain Camp is set within the curved and rugged landscape of Damaraland. It sits between the Ugab and Huab Rivers in a beautiful location high on a rugged outcrop. Each of the buildings nestles between huge granite boulders and the camp is a perfect base from which to explore southern Damaraland and nearby archaeological and geological sites such as Twyfelfontein.
Rooms
There are 15 rooms at the camp, six of which occupy the perimeter of the camp to offer incredible views of the desert landscape. The seven superior rooms do not have the same views but are built uniquely around natural rocks on the site. Each room is reached by pathways weaving through the boulders and they are decorated in an African theme with colonial-style wooden furniture, vibrant colours and soft fabrics. They all have private verandas and en-suite bathrooms. The Mountain Suite affords, even more, luxury and space with a lounge area, private dining room and indoor and outdoor bathroom.
Communal Areas
Tucked away among the boulders is the main area. Head through reception and past the gift shop to find a large lounge decorated in earthy browns and creams. Take dinner inside the thatched dining room or out amid the rocks and under the stars. Relax with a drink by the campfire or enjoy a sundowner high atop the rocks and swim in the pool amid pure nature.
Activities
Take guided drives at Mowani Mountain Camp with local guides who will share their knowledge of the land, it’s inhabitants and their traditions. You’ll leave with a wealth of knowledge and may even spot the area’s desert-adapted elephants along the way. Take early morning drives to explore the dunes, head out on guided or self-guided walks through the landscape or visit Twyfelfontein to see ancient rock carvings and the Organ Pipes formed 150 million years ago.
