Meaning ‘hippo’ in the local Chichewa language, Mvuu Lodge is a highly respected and upmarket camp where guests can expect to see a large number of hippos roaming the lush surrounds of the lodge and lagoon. With local and friendly staff, luxurious rooms and plenty of activities, this rustic lodge offers an ideal base for exploring the unspoiled landscapes of Liwonde National Park.
Location
The lodge overlooks a lagoon on the banks of the Shire River in Liwonde National Park. The park is abundant in wildlife and birdlife, compromising riverine forests, bustling floodplains and open savannah. After African Parks took over management of the park in 2015, the land has been transformed and secured to re-establish a good predator population, exceptional birdlife and many elephant, buffalo and hippo enjoying the waters of Shire River.
Rooms
Sandy paths lead to eight raised stone chalets with perfect views of the lagoon. Huge double beds are surrounded by walk-in mosquito nets and windows are draped in calico curtains to allow for a cool breeze and privacy. The honeymoon tent offers a sunken bath and shaded gazebo for observing the lagoon from comfy armchairs and three of the rooms are larger than the rest, offering lounge areas with armchairs and coffee tables and an open-plan bathroom. The remaining four rooms also have sunken bathtubs and outdoor showers.
Communal Areas
A raised thatch building houses the comfortable lounge and area with dark wooden tables, bright furnishings and many nature books and magazines to enjoy. The dining room is open-fronted and sits alongside the lagoon so meals can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors while spotting the local birds and wildlife. A walkway leads to a deck and pool area surrounded by loungers and for the evenings, a firepit provides a welcome location for sundowners.
Activities
Much of the activity centres around the Shire River where guests can float along the water in the lodge’s covered boat for hippo, crocodile and elephant sightings. Take day and night drives in Liwonde National Park to discover its diverse landscapes or guided walks with armed scouts for a closer look at the flora and fauna. For an extended trip, guests can take a three-day trek across the park along the Shire River Trail for complete nature immersion.
