Ras Kutani, this charmingly rustic beach property is, without doubt, one of the best of its kind in Tanzania. Good multi-night discounts can be incorporated when booked in conjunction with Siwandu in Selous Game Reserve or Jongomero in Ruaha National Park.
As of June 2020, Ras Kutani has sadly closed
At this time there are no plans for the lodge to re-open in its current form, but please do contact us for the latest information
Location
Although remote, Ras Kutani is just a 15-minute shuttle flight from Dar es Salaam. It sits tucked into a tranquil section of white, sandy beach against a background of rich vegetation.
Rooms
There are nine generously sized reed-and-thatch cottages, four larger suites with private plunge pools and a family lodge. All are water-facing and linked by white sand paths. Rooms are bright and airy, with French doors, traditional décor, and veranda hammocks perfect for afternoon naps.
Communal Areas
As well as a restaurant, lounge and bar, there is a swimming pool and shop on site. A sea-facing patio doubles as an extended dining area and a place to enjoy drinks. Considering the price, the facilities and décor are rather simple – more a relaxed, ‘barefoot’ luxury than the kind found in Zanzibar’s The Residence or Baraza. Yet with great food and personable service, Ras Kutani oozes the charm that these upmarket resorts often lack.
Activities
Ras Kutani’s onsite facilities are limited – this is a place to unwind, relax and no more. The lack of coral here means snorkelling is sub-par and scuba-diving is not offered. Kayaking and canoeing gear is, however, available for use in the lagoon, and an 80-year-old shipwreck marooned on the beach provides an intriguing landmark to explore. Luckily, swimming here is not subject to daily tidal changes as in Zanzibar. Guided walks through the local village can be arranged, and the forest offers sightings of black and white colobus monkeys.

DRY SEASON
A brief interlude of dry and sunny weather before the long rains arrive in late March.
This is a great time of year to scuba-dive or snorkel, with water visibility usually over 20 meters.
Its proximity to the equator combined with its position along the Indian Coastline means that the Tanzania coastline has a tropical climate with consistent warm-to-hot temperatures throughout the year. The midday temperature averages around 32°C/90°F the majority of the year, while mornings are more pleasant at 22°C/72°F on average.
There are two wet seasons in the majority of Tanzania, and the coast is no exception. The first, known as the ‘long rains’, takes place between March and May, while the milder short rains take place between October and December. Between these are two drier spells: January – February and June – October.

WET SEASON - 'LONG RAINS'
The beginning and end of the rains varies each year, but generally, this period is the wettest time of the year. This wet season is often characterised by overcast skies, consecutive days of rain, and relatively strong winds. Water clarity is also quite poor due to weather conditions. Overall, this is a poor time of year to visit, though bargains can be found with the relatively cheap low season rates.

WET SEASON - 'SHORT RAINS'
This is a rather unpredictable time of the year, with occasional heavy showers or thunderstorms interspersing the sunny spells. Though technically the wet season, the rains are not as intense during this period as during the long rains, making it a good time to visit Tanzania. Water clarity can be good at this time, allowing for great scuba-diving and snorkelling conditions.
