Rubondo Island Camp is part of the Asilia property collection, which holds some outstanding Tanzanian properties. With its quaint cottages secluded in unspoilt landscape, Rubondo is no exception. Although rather expensive and difficult to access, Rubondo offers some of the most unforgettable experiences in Tanzania. A wonderful destination to wind down after a Northern Circuit Tanzania safari, especially if beach resorts are not your thing.Â
Location
Set in the vast Lake Victoria, on Rubondo Island National Park, this is the only property on the island – few African properties are this isolated. The camp itself is in thick equatorial forest, just a short distance from the Lake Victoria shores. There are direct flights to Rubondo Island from Arusha and the Serengeti.
Rooms
The camp contains eight waterfront cottages designed to tie in perfectly with the natural environment, all built with local materials and with an airy, open feel.
Communal Areas
There is a large lounge area to relax in between activities, and meals are taken alfresco on the veranda. In the evening, guests are invited to have campfire drinks on the beach before heading for dinner.
Activities
Although not a premier safari location, Rubondo does offer a good selection of activities. This includes boating safaris, fishing, forest walks and hikes which allow you to take in the region’s diverse wildlife. This is one of the few locations in Tanzania where it is possible to see chimpanzees in the wild, and there is an opportunity to join Rubondo Island’s chimpanzee habituation team.

It is possible to track chimpanzees throughout the year, and on this basis we regard the park as being suitable for visiting during the vast majority of the year. It is worth bearing in mind that during the wetter months of the year, the park trails can be muddy and slippery, and thus more difficult to negotiate.
