A landscape of mopane forest and baobab trees hosts a variety of wildlife including black rhino, the endangered roan and sable antelope. To the west runs the Chiredzi River and to the southwest, close to the national park, Runde River flows. The lodge itself is owned by The Malilangwe Trust, a non-profit organization which conserves and supports the wildlife and habitats of the region and the neighbouring communities.
Rooms
All six suites have view of Lake Malilangwe and their design is in keeping with local Shangaan heritage. Interiors are spacious yet cosy, carved from stone with high thatched roofs and rustic wooden logs adorning the wall behind the bed. Floor-to-ceiling windows flow out to a game viewing deck where a private plunge pool awaits. The bedroom offers panoramic lake views and en-suites have both indoor and outdoor rain showers and freestanding tubs.
Communal Areas
The communal areas offer a contemporary space paying homage to local Shangaan culture with African patterns adorning the walls and textiles throughout. Exquisite meals are enjoyed in the indoor dining room or teak dining deck. Through the open-air lounge, two pools and a jacuzzi overlook the dam and surrounding hills and the firepit and bar extend right over the water. The lodge also has a spa and yoga room.
Activities
Game drives are led in the morning and afternoon by excellent guides who share their knowledge of the ancient rock art and local culture as well as leading you to discover the endangered black rhino and bathing elephants. Guests can take various guided walks including strolls through riverine forests or to the waterholes and hides around the lodge. Boat and fishing cruises are also available and the lodge itself has two tennis courts and a golf course nearby.

WET SEASON
This is the wettest period of the year with, again rainfall normally comes in the form of an afternoon thunderstorm. Temperatures are hot during the day, averaging a maximum of 33°C/91°F, mornings are much more pleasant averaging 20°C/68°F.
The landscape by this stage is rapidly becoming lush, green and beautiful. Not perfect for game viewing, but there are many new born animals as well as migratory birdlife to enjoy.
Like the rest of Zimbabwe, Gonarezhou has very distinct wet and dry seasons; rain is common, usually in the form of sharp thunderstorms from November through to April, the rest of the year clear skies dominate. We would generally recommend visiting Gonarezhou during the peak of the dry season; as the landscape dries up wildlife becomes more concentrated around water sources while at the same time thinner/ drier vegetation improves visibility. Having said this, there is a lot to be said for the ‘emerald season’; beautiful green scenery, fantastic birding and fewer tourists can make for a wonderful and unique experience.
