"Situated conveniently close to Johannesburg, the North West Province is all about the wild life… and we don’t just mean the game that roams the savannah and thornveld of Madikwe, one of South Africa’s largest reserves. This relatively flat area – the Highveld – also boasts Sun City, a thrilling resort known for its wave pool (yes, there’s a beach – 550km away from the ocean), casino, cabaret shows and manicured golf courses.”

Madikwe and the North West Province

When malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve was formed in 1991, one of the world’s largest relocations of wildlife was undertaken when more than 8,000 animals were brought onto what was then a 680 square kilometre reserve. Today 750 square kilometre Madikwe, which transitions from the bushveld typical of South Africa’s Highveld into Botswana’s thornveld, teems with 60 species of mammals, and what makes it particularly special is that the Big 5 reserve has a thriving population of highly endangered wild dogs. Madikwe is characterised by vast open grasslands, pockets of forests and rocky hills, which are a favoured domain for elusive leopards.

Just 150km from Madikwe and between that park and Johannesburg is Pilanesberg, a game reserve that lies within an extinct crater formed 1,2-billion years ago. Ecologically the Pilanesberg is an unusually rich and diverse area: the transition zone from the dry Kalahari to the wetter Lowveld has attracted a very wide variety of animals, including roan and sable antelope, tsessebe, cheetah, kudu and the Big 5.

SUMMER – WET SEASON

A beautiful time of year with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. The summer months are the wettest in the year, rainfall is however usually very short-lived arriving in the form of sharp afternoon thunderstorms. With ample water sources wildlife does tend to be more dispersed during these months, vegetation is also a little thicker – so unfortunately not an ideal for period game viewing.

Situated on the highveld plateau, and has a subtropical highland climate. The region enjoys a sunny climate, with the summer months characterised by hot days followed by afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings, and the winter months by dry, sunny days followed by cold nights.

AUTUMN

Temperatures begin to drop with pleasant midday highs and cool mornings. The likelihood of rainfall also declines during this period, ultimately improving the chances of good game viewing opportunities.

WINTER – DRY SEASON

The driest months of the year, with barely any rainfall and blue skies dominating. Mornings are however very cold, so worth packing warm clothes. The winter months mark the best time to visit this region, as the wildlife becomes more concentrated around the few remaining water sources.

SPRING

Temperatures begin to rise once again, as do the chances of rain. As soon as the first rains arrive the landscape transforms, which can be a beautiful sight to witness. These rains do however disperse wildlife, decreasing the likelihood of good sightings. The first true rainfall can arrive at any period over these months but is obviously more likely by October.
