It’s on the west coast that you find Port Louis, the small capital of Mauritius. Just 20 minutes away, the calm, shallow waters around Trou aux Biches have made this part of the island a favourite for families, while south of Port Louis some of the region’s most luxurious hotels can be found around Flic en Flac. Here, the popular casuarina-fringed beach delivers all the tropical-holiday cliches: extensive sandy beaches, pale turquoise water, and enclaves of umbrellas and sunbeds.
The fishing village of Tamarin is a haven for adventure travellers: not only has the area garnered a reputation as an excellent surfing and kite surfing destination, but the magnificent Black River Gorges National Park, fantastic for walking and birding, is nearby.
In the south west, the isolated Le Morne peninsula serves up dramatic scenery. Here, a sandy beach stretches around a lagoon that’s protected by a reef and watched over by a basaltic monolith that rises more than 500 metres above sea level. That mountain, which was used as a shelter by runaway slaves in the 18th and early 19th centuries, is now listed as a Unesco Cultural Landscape.
