"Protecting the largest remaining tract of Afromontane forest in East or Central Africa, Nyungwe has much to offer hikers and active wildlife enthusiasts. The most popular activity is chimpanzee tracking, but the 130km trail network also includes a thrilling canopy walkway, and offers the chance to see a wealth of handsome monkeys and forest birds.”

PLAN MY JOURNEY

Nyungwe National Park

Extending for 1,015km² over Rwanda’s mountainous southwest, the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe comprise 1,000-plus known plant species, among them giant mahoganies and other hardwoods that grow up to 60m tall, other-worldly giant lobelias, and some 200 varieties of orchid.

The park is best explored on foot, but it is also bisected by a 50km trunk road that offers scintillating views across a seemingly endless succession of forest-swathed hills that roll towards the distant Burundi border.

Primates are the main attraction. More than 500 chimpanzees are resident, and tracking expeditions in search of these human-like apes depart every morning. A troop of 400-plus Ruwenzori colobus monkeys is often encountered in the vicinity of Uwinka Reception Centre, as is the localised and unusually terrestrial L’Hoest’s monkey.

Birdwatching is a major draw. The checklist of 310 includes a large number of very localised forest specialists, notably a full 26 Albertine Rift endemics, as well as the unforgettable great blue turaco, which looks like a psychedelic turkey.

Rwanda’s most important catchment area, Nyungwe supplies water to 70% of the country’s population, and its central ridge divides Africa’s two largest drainage systems, the Nile and the Congo (indeed, one hiking route in Nyungwe leads to a spring regarded to be the most remote source of the world’s longest river).

A 200m-long, 40m-high canopy suspended between higher slopes and giant trees offers superb – albeit rather wobbly – bird’s-eye views into the upper canopy and over a steep stream bed lined with tall trees and ferns.

DRIER PERIOD

A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.

Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.

Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.

The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
