"A popular and convenient place to break up the long drive between Kampala/Entebbe and Bwindi, this low-key national park protects a tract of acacia woodland that harbours several antelope and bird species with a limited distribution elsewhere in Uganda.”

PLAN MY JOURNEY

Lake Mburo National Park

Centred on the forest-fringed lake for which it is named, Lake Mburo National Park is often dismissed as a quick stopover en route to bigger guns such as Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth. But boat trips on the eponymous lake are a delight, usually offering close-up encounters with buffalo, hippos and a wealth of aquatic birds, while the abundant plains wildlife includes zebra, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope. Horseback safaris allow you to get far closer to the wildlife than you would in a 4×4 or on foot, and guided night drives frequently yield leopard sightings. For birdwatchers, this is the best place in Uganda to tick species associated primarily with acacia woodland.

DRIER PERIOD

A brief drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March. The altitude does, however, mean that this ‘dry season’ is a little unpredictable. While this park always has good birding during this time of the year migratory species can be found in full breeding colours.

Its location so close to the equator means that the Lake Mburo National Park has consistent temperatures throughout the year, while the high altitude (1,239 to 1,607m or 4,065 to 5,272ft) moderate these to a pleasant average maximum of 27°C/81°F through the year. Mornings can be surprisingly cool, so do pack a light fleece encase you need one.

Lake Mburo has no distinct dry season, although June and July do tend to be the driest months of the year. There is also a slight lapse in rainfall in January and February.

The park can be good throughout the year, but game viewing is best in the driest months of the year, as vegetation thins and wildlife becomes a little more concentrated.

WET SEASON

The exact start and end of the rains are always a little uncertain, but generally, this period is the wettest time of the year. This wet season is also often characterised by overcast skies and consecutive days of rain. The air is less hazy during the wetter month, improving visibility and with that some incredible views can be seen during the sunnier periods.

Experiences

The only place in Uganda to enjoy a horse safari in a National Park

Without the noise of an engine, you can hear so much more and you really feel part of nature. Riding a horse means you often get the chance to see the more timid animals. You will nearly always see a mixture of warthog, topi, impala, duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck and zebra; If lucky you may see eland and buffalo.

Join a night drive to get a different safari perspective

Lace up your boots and embark on a guided walking safari

Head out with knowledgable, armed guides and become hooked on the exhilarating experience that is a walking safari. Explore the quiet wilderness in its purest form through the early morning hours to track big game, learn of the reserve's smaller animals and move through the grass in the same fashion as early explorers.

Enjoy a boat safari on Lake Mburo

A boat trip on Lake Mburo is the best way to see the lake and its inhabitants. It is particularly good for water birds (especially Finfoot and Fish Eagles) but you will also come across hippos, crocodiles and other animals coming down for a drink.

Join a game drive for close-up encounters with a range of animals that are as diverse as the landscapes whizzing past

From June to October, Mana Pools teems with wildlife. Traverse the floodplains in your open safari vehicle through a magnificent unfenced landscape where animals move freely throughout. See huge herds of elephants and buffalo on the wide plains, waterways alive with hippo and crocodiles and wild dog hunting in their packs.

A birders paradise

Both Uganda and Rwanda offer some of the world’s best bird watching, with a vast diversity of bird species. Uganda has over 1,000 bird species with 150 found only in Uganda. Each location offers the chance to see a number of different birds, with the vast majority endemic to the Region.
