"The untamed Wild Coast is where the pace of life slows down. It’s a region loved by intrepid travellers and backpackers; by those wanting to walk on open stretches of remote beaches and also connect with the Xhosa communities that, for generations, have lived on this land.”

Wild Coast

Just “up” the coast from East London and stretching to Port Edward, is one of South Africa’s most underdeveloped regions, the Wild Coast. It really is just as its name implies: rugged, wild and wonderful. Out here undulating hills drop directly onto sea sand. Empty beaches stretch for kilometre upon kilometre, rural homesteads are scattered across open grasslands and family hotels pepper the coastline at places like Morgan Bay, Kei Mouth and Coffee Bay.

Away from the small hotels and apart from the occasional cow, it’s unusual to come across another legged-being on the beach. The coastline is known for its shipwrecks, as well as the dolphins, humpback and southern right whales and, each year, the “Sardine Run”, which usually beings here. The Sardine Run is a migration of millions upon millions of sardines, which are followed by sharks, dolphins, seals, gannets and other sea birds. It’s an incredible spectacle to witness.

Cintsa, which has an extensive sandy beach fringed by plump indigenous forest, is the gateway to the Wild Coast. It is easily accessible from East London, and popular with surfers, those who like to kick back in a hammock, horse ride on the beach or take a gentle canoe upriver. In fact, the entire stretch of coastline is a wonderful place to enjoy being outdoors, from mountain biking and abseiling to horse riding, hiking, fly fishing, angling, game viewing, surfing and bird watching.

Hole in the Wall, a battered rock formation with a hole in it, is perhaps the most famous landmark along the Wild Coast. Other photogenic sights include the various lighthouses, the cliffs at Morgan Bay, and the Gap and Blow Hole at Port St Johns.

SUMMER

A nice time of year to visit, with midday temperatures easily reaching 25°C/77°F; rainfall and humidity levels are however the highest of the year.

Though there can be a considerable climatic difference between the northern and southern parts of The Wild Coast, generally this part of South Africa can be said to have a temperate climate with sub-tropical conditions through most of the year. Summers are warm and pleasant but are the wettest months of the year. The winter months are mild and with generally fine dry weather.
