Chelinda Lodge offers a truly luxurious escape in the highlands of Malawi’s wilderness. With its forest backdrop and swiss-style log cabins in the ‘African Alps’, Chelinda is a cosy base to enjoy the vistas and discover the wildlife of Malawi’s oldest park.
Location
The lodge is nestled within the highlands of Nyika National Park. Surrounded by lakes, streams and rolling hills, the lodge stands in a large pine forest with panoramic views overlooking the Nyika Plateau. The park is Malawi’s oldest and largest and its grasslands are alive with large herds of zebra, eland and roan among others.
Rooms
Eight two-story log chalets sit at the edge of a pine forest, connected to the main area by elevated wooden walkways. With their warm wooden clad walls and flooring, each room is open-plan and dressed in earthy, neutral tones. Each bedroom has a fireplace, private veranda and en suite bathroom.
Communal Areas
Reminiscent of a swiss chalet, the lodge is constructed from stone and timber collected from the plateau. The cosy main area has large windows looking out on the vistas and a roaring fireplace for cold highland evenings. The quiet lounge opens onto a large outdoor deck for star-gazing at the perfectly clear night skies.
Activities
Guests can take game drives across the plateau in search of roan, eland and Crawshay’s zebra. Night drives may also offer sightings of leopard, hyena and side-striped jackal. For avid birdwatchers, the park is a great spot to view over 400 species of bird including the Red-ring Fracolin and botanists will enjoy over 200 orchid species during the summer months. The lodge has mountain bikes for guests to explore the scenery at closer range and a number of biking trails are available to suit all levels. Three nearby dams are also teeming with fish for a spot of catch-and-release fishing.
