Nyika National Park and Northern Malawi
Extending over 3,134 sq km, Malawi’s largest national park protects a highland plateau of undulating grassland incised by wooded gorges and studded with relict forest patches. Better suited to hiking than to conventional game drives, the plateau supports a fair amount of wildlife, including substantial populations of elephant and leopard, as well as roan antelope, reedbuck, bushbuck, eland and zebra.
Botanical highlights of this biodiverse park include 200 orchid species, most of which bloom over January and February. A checklist of 400+ birds includes the localised montane grassland specialists such as wattled crane, Denham’s bustard, mountain marsh widow and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, and a wide variety of forest dwellers notably the gorgeous bar-tailed trogon.
Well worth an overnight stop en route to Nyika, Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve protects a vast tract of brachystegia woodland focussed on Kazuni Dam, which hosts large numbers of hippo and waterbirds, and attracts regular elephant visits. Another highlight of Northern Malawi, the historic Livingstonia Mission was founded high on the Rift Valley escarpment in 1894, and – reached via a snaking road with 20 hairpin bends – it offers fine views to the sparkling lakeshore almost 1,000m below.
