The camp sits by the dry Auab Riverbed amongst camel thorn trees on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. This 37,000 hectare reserve compromises towering dunes, incredibly clear night skies and vas gravel plains. It also offers a private entrance into the Namib-Naukluft Park. Overlooking a nearby waterhole, guests will witness frequent visitors to the water, including ostriches, gemsbok, springbok, jackal and spotted hyena.
Rooms
The eleven chalets built atop wooden platforms are decorated beautifully to merge with the desert landscape. With neutral and pastel tones throughout, the space is very relaxing, airy and light with entirely glass fronts. There’s a comfortable lounge area and a writing desk at the front of the space. Glass doors open onto private verandas with plunge pools and steps lead to a rooftop stargazing platforms where guests can sleep under the stars. En-suites have both indoor and outdoor showers.
Communal Areas
The main area is split over three levels with a peaked, tall thatched roof. More earthy, neutral tones dominate the interiors with white-washed wooden floors designed to reflect the white clay of Dead Vlei. Curved stone walls lead to an open-plan lounge, dining area and bar with glass doors opening onto the deck. Meals are served outside or enjoyed by the stone fireplace inside. At the top of the space is a library where there are beanbags, a chaise lounge and scatter cushions to relax on. Adorned with clay pots, sculptures and hand-woven baskets, it’s an organic space to enjoy the many books and board games on offer. To cool off from the desert heat, there’s a small pool and deck.Â
Activities
Take early morning game drives over the dunes of Sossusvlei to seek out desert game and flora, embark on day trips into the Namib-Naulkuft Mountains and take guided walks in the reserve. Night walks are a particular highlight where UV lights uncover scorpions and white lady spiders among other critters. For an elevated view of the dunes, take early morning hot air balloon rides or for a unique way to explore the dramatic landscape, ride on horseback through the desert.
