This Cape-Cod-style guesthouse is by far the most attractive building on the fabulous cliff path that connects Hermanus' Old and New Harbours. Set fairly far back from the path, it offers a fair amount of privacy along with great sea views, and the rate is the best in town, given it's central and seafront location.
Location
A narrow pathway through the fynbos joins the house to the cliff path that winds along Westcliff, which sees close whale sightings. All rooms (apart from the apartment) are sea-facing, but the more newly built ground-floor rooms that open onto the pool are disappointing. It’s a 15 to 30-minute stroll to Old Harbour and the town centre; a 30 to 45-minute walk to New Harbour.
Rooms
Rooms are spacious with en suite bathrooms and beautiful sea views over Walker Bay, featuring TVs, minibars, safes, tea/coffee facilities and a ceiling fan or air conditioning. Standard rooms are on the ground floor; two in the main house featuring original high ceilings, and another adjacent to the pool with French doors opening onto a deck. Deluxe rooms are spread between the main house and the grounds and vary in size, layout and style. One has a separate entrance and balcony overlooking the sea.
Suites are in the main house’s loft, offering more space and private balconies. The Apartment has two bedrooms and bathrooms, and a living area with French doors leading to a patio and private garden.
Communal Areas
It’s a guesthouse, rather than a full-service hotel, but staff are well trained, warm and knowledgeable about the best restaurants and activities. There is a lovely pool and courtyard/terrace, with a great view of the bay.
Activities
The pool is surrounded by sun loungers with sweeping views over the bay, or guests can relax in the lounge and browse its selection of books. From the guesthouse you have direct access to the scenic clifftop path. You may be able to spot southern right whales, which migrate from Antarctica each year, arriving at South Africa’s shores in June to calve and rear their young until November.
