Overberg
The exceptional beauty of the Winelands and the popularity of the Garden Route often overshadow the Overberg, an enchanting area that falls between the two. It is wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and a striking ridge of Cape Fold Mountains, and offers travellers a wonderful mix of culture, history, adventure and natural attractions.
It is here, in this southernmost region of Africa, that rolling fields turn golden as canola crops burst into bloom; mountainsides are peppered with proteas and the coastline, when not a ribbon of sand, is often crinkled with craggy rocks. Hermanus boasts the best land-based whale watching in the world: a scenic cliff-top path offers incredible views of the area – distant mountains looming out of the sea, and, of course, the migrating whales.
Just half an hour inland from Hermanus is Stanford, a village loved by those who choose to enjoy a slower pace of life: push a canoe out onto the river, amble through antique stores, hop from cellar to cellar or sample the artisan cheese and beers produced in the area. Thrill-seekers often get their fix at Gansbaai, a popular place for shark cage diving, while those wanting to see the reason so many sharks are in this area take boat trips to Dyer Island, home to a colony of thousands of penguins.
Nature-lovers also enjoy spending time at some of the area’s nature reserves: De Hoop, Heuningberg, De Mond. The Overberg is exceptionally rich in floral variety: fynbos, the smallest and most prolific of plant kingdoms, dominates much of the landscape, which makes for making interesting walks and hikes, and excellent birding.
Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa and also the treacherous point where Indian and Atlantic oceans are said to meet; just around the coast, Struisbaai has one of the longest stretches of beach in the country. The 14km sweep of sand is dotted with historic fisherman’s cottages, which are also a popular attraction at the historic fishing village of Arniston.
Travellers interested in the past often make a beeline for Swellendam, one of the oldest towns in South Africa, where there is a large collection of well-maintained Cape Dutch buildings.
