Okonjima Plains Camp is an informal and friendly camp with an enormous modern barn to relax in, oven-baked pizza nights around the campfire and large rooms with plains views. A perfect base for those wanting to visit the AfriCat Foundation and track leopard and cheetah on foot.
Location
Okonjima Plains Camp sits just south of Okojima within the 2,000-hectare Okonjima Private Nature Reserve with views across the unspoilt landscape. Populated with 36 leopards and six rescued cheetahs, the camp is home to the AfriCat Foundation. The foundation works with and educates local farmers in order to conserve Namibia’s leopard population. Guests will have the opportunity to see researcher at work and participate in tracking them on foot. It also sits just 2.5km from sister camp, Okonjima Bush Camp.
Rooms
There are 24 rooms at Okonima Plains Camp, 14 standard rooms and 10 view rooms. All rooms are spacious with interiors decorated in blues and greens and African artwork and photographs lining the walls. Woollen rugs sit underfoot for a cosy feel and there are two double beds and en-suites with large mirrors, twin basins and showers. View Rooms are the larger option with outside verandas offering views over the plains. While Standard Rooms still have a view, they don’t have verandas.
Communal Areas
The camp’s main barn is a modern yet warm affair housed in a vast split-level space with polished floors, tall ceilings with exposed beams and brickwork throughout. Floor-to-ceiling windows line the front of the space for endless views across the plains. There is a lounge and dining area both decorated in earthy, natural tones of green, brown and cream. Outside, there is a large seating area with a swimming pool, barbeque and pizza ovens to enjoy dinner and drinks under the stars.
Activites
Okonjima is home to the AfriCat Foundation. From here, guests can join researchers to track cheetah by foot and drive through the night in search of leopards. Alternatively, take guided game drives throughout the day to see giraffe, mountain zebra and ancient rock art or watch wildlife from the safety of the camp’s hide. Guests can also embark on the Bushman Trail to learn about life as a San Bushman.
