"With its atmospheric Old Town centred on Portuguese-built Fort Jesus, Mombasa is the busiest port in East Africa and Kenya’s second-largest city. Set on a small island linked to the mainland by two bridges, Mombasa is also the road, rail and air gateway to gorgeous Diani Beach, which offers fine swimming and other marine activities, as well as some unexpectedly good opportunities for wildlife viewing. ”

PLAN MY JOURNEYMombasa & Diani Beach
An important centre of maritime trade since the 12th century or earlier, the historic Old Town of Mombasa comprises a compact maze of narrow alleys lined by ancient mosques, hole-in-the-wall coffee and juice shops, and tall Arabic-style homesteads dating to pre-colonial times. Overlooking it, imposing Fort Jesus was the most strategically-important building on the Swahili Coast for a full three centuries after it the Portuguese built it in 1593; it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and fascinating museum.
Mombasa is flanked by beach resorts, the most popular of which is Diana, a long, idyllic expanse of palm-fringed white sand 30km to the south. Despite being the main focal point of Kenya’s all-inclusive beach package scene, Diani remains blissfully uncrowded by Mediterranean standards, and it is a great base for marine activities such as diving, snorkelling and windsurfing. Relict patches of coastal forest on Diani support plenty of monkeys and a good variety of birds. For those craving a safari fix, the scenic Shimba Hills National Reserve, only 30km inland, hosts healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, leopard, giraffe, zebra and warthog, as well as being the last Kenyan stronghold of the handsome sable antelope.
