Bordering the Moremo Game Reserve in the north of the Okavango Delta, the Vumbura Plains sits on the Kwedi Concession, a private concession used exclusively by guests of Vumbura Plains and sister camp, Little Vumbura. Open floodplains, dense woodlands and savannah grasslands spread across 20,000 acres of this huge reserve. The diversity of habitats and wildlife offer good seasonal game-viewing and a range of both land and water based activities.
Rooms
With a total of 14 spacious rooms spread across two linked and identical camps, Vumbura Plains North and Vumbura Plains South. Rooms are on raised wooden decks and have an intimate and private feel. Interiors are contemporary and unique with light and natural hues, huge beds raised on platforms, open-sided lounge areas and writing desks. Each room has a private plunge pool and ‘sala’, an area from which to watch the passing wildlife, and en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers.
Communal Areas
The raised dining, lounge and bar areas in both camps are smart, open-plan and sprawling, on raised decks with views across the floodplains of the Okavango Delta. The lounge and dining area flow into one another and a star-gazing deck extends out into the landscape with a cosy campfire for cool nights.
Activities
Take game drives with knowledgeable guides through the varied countryside or a boat safari through the waterways of the Okavango Delta to explore hippo habitats and papyrus reeds. To discover the patchwork of channels, lagoons and islands from on high, exciting helicopter rides over the delta are available. To keep your feet on the ground, walking safaris and nature walks offer a different perspective and a great opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna of the African bush with a professional safari guide.

Botswana has very distinct wet and dry seasons; rain is common, usually in the form of sharp thunderstorms from October through to early May, the rest of the year clear skies dominate. As Botswana is predominately a safari destination we would generally recommend visiting during the peak of the dry season; as the landscape dries up, wildlife becomes more concentrated around the rivers and watercourse while at the same time thinner/ drier vegetation improves visibility.
Having said this, there is a lot to be said for the ‘emerald season’; beautiful green scenery, fantastic birding, large flowing rivers and fewer tourists can make for a wonderful and unique experience.
There are also two significant exceptions to the above rule of thumb; Kalahari Desert and the Makgadikgadi which come into their own during the wet season as wildlife moves in to take advantage of the fresh, lush grass.
Temperatures can be very high in and around the wet season; when the sunlight is at its strongest, however nights can be cool to sub-freezing throughout the year. So, don’t forget to pack warm clothing!
