Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel

Location

Volcanoes National Park holds five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga chain, Karisimbi the highest of them at 4,507 metres. From the hotel’s garden the horizon is a line of them, and the name follows from that.

Five Volcanoes sits on the Musanze-Kinigi road, in the town and not in the forest. We would rather state that plainly than let photography imply otherwise: there is no park frontage here, nothing wandering past the terrace at dawn. What there is instead is a garden with the volcanoes across it, and a position approximately 15 minutes from the park headquarters at Kinigi under normal conditions.

Rooms

13 rooms, 5 categories, and a spread wider than that number suggests.

Standard Rooms look onto the garden and keep it simple: a king-size or twin bed, cotton linen, large windows, a modern bathroom with a rainfall shower. Deluxe Rooms are the ones most people take, buying more space and a private terrace or balcony, and the bathroom carries either a rainfall shower or a deep-soak bathtub, not both.

The Honeymoon Cottage is a different proposition again: a king-size bed, a private terrace over the gardens, and a bathroom with both the deep-soak tub and the rainfall shower. The Family Suite runs to two separate bedrooms around a shared living space with a stone fireplace, its own terrace and garden, which solves the problem of a family who want to be together without being in the same room.

Then there is the Volcano Manor. Villa is the more accurate word for it: a Master Suite and a Twin Suite sharing their own living room, dining area, kitchen access, garden terrace and jacuzzi, and the whole thing can be taken at once. The Master Suite has a bathtub set in the bedroom itself, a double rainfall shower in the en suite bathroom, a fireplace, and a terrace looking toward the volcanoes. Soft drinks, house wine and beer come with it, and so do massage treatments. Book the Manor whole and nobody outside your own party crosses it.

What the rooms are not is designed. They are generous and well kept, and plainer than the rate might lead you to expect, because the money at this property has gone into the service and the logistics and not the joinery. Given the choice we would take it that way round, and the fireplaces make the case. Nights at this altitude run cold, and a room you can properly warm beats a room that has only been styled.

Communal Areas

Everything indoors gathers in one room. Sofas, a dining area at one end of it, and candles once it is dark. Outside, the garden is the other half of the property’s character: breakfast tables under the trees, birdsong, and corners to sit and read.

The afternoon is where this hotel is at its best. Muddy boots are taken away at the door for cleaning. Tea, freshly brewed and Rwandan, is waiting. A foot massage on the terrace is included in every stay, for legs that have just come four hours down a mountain. Lunch is served when you actually get back, not at a fixed hour. The sauna and the pool sit there for the rest of the afternoon, and the hearth is lit again by evening. It is rarely warmer than twenty degrees here and drops to single figures before dawn, which is why the warmth matters more than it would at sea level.

Every meal is on site and included, so breakfast can be pushed early to meet the park departure and a hot meal is ready whenever the forest releases you. The bar runs to local beer and cocktails, with popcorn and peanuts alongside. The kitchen should be understood for what it is: organised around feeding people around trek timings, not around being a destination in itself, and over a longer stay the range will start to feel familiar.

For a property with a road in its address, it is a calm place. The garden absorbs most of it, and the position reads far quieter than a map suggests.

Activities

The trek belongs to the park, so what matters here is the day around it.

Before trek day someone sits down with you and talks through fitness, mobility and pace, and with your consent that is passed to the park team to be taken into account when the groups are allocated. It is the one part of a park-run product a hotel can shape, and given how much the walk varies it is worth doing. Gaiters and walking sticks are lent out for the mud.

An on-site babysitter is available, which means both parents can trek on the same morning instead of splitting the family across two days.

Golden monkeys, the walk up to Dian Fossey’s grave, the climbs on Bisoke, Karisimbi and Muhabura and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s campus at Kinigi are all within reach from here, with village workshops, coffee farms and Intore dancers for a gentler afternoon.
