Set in a colonial manor, The Bishop’s House makes a luxurious and convenient base for gorilla trekking at the nearby Volcanoes National Park.

Plan your journey

Location

Nestled in the Musanze suburbs, The Bishop’s House is close to the bustling shops of Ruhengeri town. Yet the hotel also makes a great base for nature trekking, being situated just a 30-minutes’ drive from Volcanoes National Park, home to the mountain gorilla and golden monkey.

Facilities

Communal facilities at The Bishop’s House include a tastefully decorated double-height lounge fitted with comfortable seating and local artworks, a bar, a library, a terrace with views across Mount Bisoke, and an opulent dining area where guests are offered a six-course dinner menu with a selection of fine wines. There are plans to develop a spa and swimming pool in the near future.

Outside there is a walled garden planted with lush, tropical flora and fauna and fitted with sun loungers, making a restful setting for a post-safari snooze.

Rooms

The hotel has nine rooms which include six standard rooms, two junior suites, and a presidential suite. All have en suite bathrooms, while the suites have a small lounge. The presidential suite also has a dressing room, balcony, and a larger bathroom. Rooms are decorated in an updated colonial style, with rich fabrics and antique four-poster beds.

Activities

Aside from cultural and shopping trips to the nearby town, guests at Bishop’s House have a variety of adventurous treks they can choose to embark on. These are largely centred around Volcanoes National Park, known for its gorilla and golden monkey-trekking. Guests can hike up Mount Bisoke and take in the awesome views from its volcanic crater lake, while more experienced climbers can tackle the even more majestic Mount Karisimbi, one of the largest mountains in all of Africa. The Musanze Caves are another interesting natural wonder to explore, while water-sports lovers can spend the afternoon canoeing along the rapids of Mukungwa River.

DRIER PERIOD

A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.

Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.

Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.

The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
