The lodge is just north of Kinigi and the closest lodge to the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park where gorilla treks depart each morning. It sits in the foothills of the Virunga Volcano range in a forest of eucalyptus trees making for a peaceful and breathtaking setting.

Rooms

There are 14 stilted lodges and seven suites, each surrounded by trees for privacy and designed to perfectly frame the surrounding landscape. Interiors are modern yet warm and cosy with earthy-coloured furnishings, fireplaces and huge floor-to-ceiling windows. Verandas offer wonderful views of the eucalyptus forest, shambas and Pyrethrum farmland.

Communal Areas

Guests can dine in The Nest, the lodge’s main dining room where Rwandan cuisine is prepared with fresh ingredients from the on-site farm. For lounging, the Nest Bar offers sofas and coffee tables set around a fireplace where cocktails and afternoon tea can be enjoyed. The Pool Bar, set within the lodge’s spa and pool area is another welcome spot for refreshments and a number of treatments are available here to reconnect body and mind.

DRIER PERIOD

A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.

Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.

Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.

The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
