Singita’s Kwitonda Lodge is a bold and contemporary accommodation, rising from the volcanic boulders of its surrounds. Designed with a strong dedication to sustainability and ecotourism, Kwitonda follows the natural geology of the landscape to create an accommodation which is both respectful of the environment and celebratory of Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage.

Location
The lodge sits delicately on the edge of Volcanoes National Park within 178 acres of land. The thick cloud forests of the park are home to a third of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas and the lodge aims to reflect their strength and vulnerability through it’s natural design. The acres of land the lodge sits on is part of an ambitious intention by Singita to restore and reforest the land and ensure the park’s endangered species have a thriving and expanding habitat to live in. Situated among wetlands and verdant meadows, guests will enjoy incredible views of the Gahinga, Muhabura and Sabyinyo volcanoes from the lodge.
Rooms
The eight suites are modern yet full of natural elements with a black, green and fierce orange colour palette, patterned lava rock walls and woven ceilings crafted by local artisans and builders. There is terracotta brickwork, raw timber furnishings and large windows which open out to lush views and the patio where a plunge pool and outdoor fireplace sit. En-suites are spacious with wardrobe space, standalone bathtubs and double copper sinks.
Communal Areas
The entire lodge is crafted from volcanic rock, river stone, red bricks made by the local community and handmade ceramic tiles. Interiors are similarly hand-crafted with artisanal pieces throughout and layers of texture and colour to mimic the extraordinary landscape. The central area of the lodge has lounges which open out to outdoor decks, dining areas, a deli and a wine cellar to explore. Relax with drinks around the firepit and observe chefs in the interactive kitchen. Become immersed in the lodge’s conservation efforts in the dedicated Conservation Lounge. Guests can watch documentaries, browse books and maps, as well as explore all the activities on offer around the area. Stroll and chat with staff in the lodge’s farm-to-table garden about all the seasonal produce on offer.
Activities
Spend time with the resident mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park on treks through the scenic forest. Encounter golden monkeys foraging in the forest and take a guided hike to the site of Dian Fossey’s famous research camp with breathtaking views of Lake Ngezi. Here, guests will have the opportunity to explore the camp and gravesites of 20 mountain gorillas. Spend time with locals at Iby’lwacu Cultural Village in Kinigi to learn of ancient traditions, take local guided walks and experience traditional dance, song and stories.
Guests can also visit the lodge’s Akarabo Nursery and vegetable garden. This on-site nursery hosts more than 60,000 plants purchased from neighbouring communities. Rehabilitating the park with the proper vegetation is part of Singita’s dedication to conserving the Rwandan landscape.

DRIER PERIOD
A slightly drier interlude before the more intense long rains arrive in March.
Rwanda is just two degrees south of the equator; this equatorial location means that temperatures throughout the year are very consistent, the variable in play is often altitude, which varies greatly across Rwanda, this, therefore, has a corresponding effect on temperature, which is surprisingly pleasant throughout the year.
Its equatorial location does, however, mean that rainfall is likely throughout the year. There are main two wet seasons in Rwanda; the first takes place between March and May, the second between September and November.
The best time to visit Rwanda is very much defined by the type of experience you are seeking. Many parks are good all year round, although you will find that one’s chances of a good sighting improve during the drier months of the year. Trekking Gorillas or Chimpanzee is not as influenced by the weather, although there is no doubt that the trekking is easier and more enjoyable during the drier times of the year.
