Translating to ‘Great Labyrinth’ in Afrikaans for the many hills and mountains surrounding it, Grand Dédale is a stylish, restored country house within a sprawling wine estate. Enjoy exceptional views of the surrounding natural beauty and magical winelands, elegant interiors and a host of activities available on the estate itself.
Location
Surrounded by three mountain ranges with the winding Kromme River running through it, the Grand Dédale Estate is set within 380 hectares of indigenous forest, vineyards and fynbos. It sits nestled at the foot of Bainskloof pass in the Doolhof valley, and as the last estate in a cul-de-sac, the location is very peaceful and private. It’s also only a 30-minute drive to Franschhoek and Stellenbosch and five minutes from the historic Wellington.
Rooms
There are just six beautifully designed rooms at Grand Dédale Country House, each individually designed and situated in the historic manor house. The rooms range from cosy loft rooms accessed via spiral staircases with en-suites and mountain and garden views, and three elegant first floor rooms decorated in fresh, pastel colours and floral furnishings. For even more space, the cottage is an exquisitely restored building with a lounge area, two bathrooms and a large private patio.
Communal Areas
The Manor House dates back to the 1700’s and now houses sophisticated, contemporary spaces to relax and dine. Have three course meals on the large verandah which wraps around the property, stroll through the landscaped gardens or take a dip in the 15-metre salt water pool. Take afternoon tea in the lounge with mountain views or head to the wellness spa for a number of healing treatments. Guests can also enjoy picnics at a number of spots on the estate.
Activities
There are a number of activities available on the estate itself such as hiking and mountain biking. Amble down the River Walk, which lines the winding riverbank or take the Vineyard which leas guests past the estate’s working vineyards and surrounding mountain views. Guests may even catch a glimpse of the landscape’s wildlife such as baboon, porcupine, buck and even Cape Leopard. The Limietberg Nature Reserve is just ten minutes from the hotel with rock pools to cool off in and trout fishing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting are all available nearby.

With a flora and fauna as biodiverse as the Western Cape it is no surprise that spring can be spectacular period to visit. Temperatures remain fairly cool, with a maximum average high of around 19°C/67°F, though the number of clear calm days is almost as high as the summer.

These months are a great time to visit South Africa. We would particularly recommend KwaZulu-Natal during this period, as well as the Southern part of the country Africa (Western, Garden Route and Eastern Cape).

SUMMER / WET SEASON
This is the perfect time to visit the Southern part of South Africa (Western, Garden Route and Eastern Cape), with clear skies and warm weather dominating. It is also a good time to visit KwaZulu-Natal and the Drakensburg Mountains.
These months mark the wet season throughout the north of the country, where you can expect high temperatures and thunderstorms. So not ideal for safaris within these regions.
