MalaMala Main Camp is a privately owned and run accommodation on the banks of the Sand River. With a warm and earthy design which blends into the surroundings of a private reserve, MalaMala is the perfect spot for prime wildlife viewing, both from the camp’s safari deck and on expertly guided drives through Sabi Sands.
Location
The camp is just one of three within the MalaMala Private Reserve, the largest in Sabi Sands and one of the oldest in South Africa. It sits adjacent to the Sand River so guests can watch for elephants, antelope and more from the comfort of their private decks. It also contains one of the largest sections of river within the area and is home to the ‘MalaMala Seven’.
Rooms
There are ten riverside rooms and ten suites at the camp, all housed in separate ochre-coloured structure amid the trees. All have beautifully designed bedrooms with a writing desk, leather sofas facing the private outdoor decks, animal print curtains and en-suites with freestanding bathtubs.
Communal Areas
Guests can lounge around chunky wooden coffee tables in the main area where local artefacts are displayed on the walls and surfaces and a rich, earthy tone is spread throughout. Relax with a drink at the stylish bar underneath photographs of local wildlife and dine in the smart dining room or under the shade of jackalberry trees on the deck. Guests can also make use of the Monkey Club, a library space with Wi-Fi, a television and a selection of DVD’s.
Activities
Take morning and afternoon game drives to explore the reserve and resident wildlife, including the ‘MalaMala Seven’, the traditional Big Five with the addition of cheetah and wild dog. Track game on foot by heading out on walking safaris or take off on a photography safari with dedicated vehicles. A ranger is assigned to each group of guests visiting the camp and kids can get involved in bushcraft, animal tracking and more.
