Cape Town is a popular first stop for many travellers to South Africa. The beautiful city has a reputation for being the most relaxed in the country and its long summer days, along with alluring attractions (including sunset concerts in botanic gardens and full-moon mountain hikes), tempt travellers to stay just a little longer.
The city of Cape Town has evolved around what is now Table Mountain National Park, which runs from Table Mountain at the city centre all the way south through the peninsula to Cape Point. This means that nature is never far away, and one can switch almost seamlessly from trendy streets packed with hipster cafes and designer stores to hiking trails offering spectacular sea views; from white-sand beaches sheltered by enormous boulders to luxurious shopping venues; and from dramatic coastal roads to cosy bars and artisan food markets.
Cape Town is the gateway to the Western Cape province, which is as popular for its impressive array of wine farms as it is for dramatic mountain ranges, artsy villages, serene nature reserves and gorgeous beaches. Easy daytrips (but well worth a longer stay) include a visit to Hermanus, which boasts the world’s best land-based whale watching, and the popular Winelands towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, which are surrounded by exquisite wine farms in the valleys of the dramatic Cape Fold mountains.
